PDF Encryption - Access encrypted PDF

Overview

You are required to view an encrypted PDF sent by someone else. You must complete these steps before they encrypt the PDF and give you access.

 

Procedure

Create your Digital ID in Adobe Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat Pro

For Acrobat Reader go to Menu and choose Preferences
For Acrobat Pro go to Edit and choose Preferences

In the Preferences menu Click Signatures in the left-hand window, then choose More next to "Identities and Trust Certificates"

Click the "Add ID" Button

 

 

Choose "A new digital ID I want to create now" and click Next

Choose "New PKCS#12 digital ID File" and click Next

Enter your information in the boxes provided

Choose a location to save your file (remember this for later) and enter a password to secure your digital ID, then click Finish

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Choose the Digital ID File you just created and click Export

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Email your certificate to the person that will be creating the encrypted document

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Enter the email address of the person creating the PDF

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Choose "Default email application" and click Continue

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Your email application will open and you can send the email
Go to the location you saved your Digital ID File and save it to a secure location on another device. If you lose this Digital ID or if your device is re-imaged, you will not be able to open encrypted files. You will need to take this file to any new computer where you plan on viewing encrypted PDFs.
